Ex-Sabah Minister Detained
KOTA KINABALU: A former state minister has been detained after a 20-year-old youth was shot dead after a fight at the Donggongon township in Penampang near here.
The ex-minister, who is from a prominent Kadazandusun family, was said to have been seen at the scene of the incident outside the Donggongon library, where his son was among those involved in a fight between two groups of youths about 4am.
Police declined to reveal his name at a press conference yesterday but people in the heartland of the Kadazandusun community could not stop talking about the shooting, given the prominence of the former minister’s family.
The talk at the weekly Sunday market and coffee shops at Donggongon, where people congregated after church service, was hotter than during the election period.
State Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Asst Comm (II) Mortadza Nazerene told reporters that the politician and the others detained were all related.
“We will be asking for their further remand tomorrow (today), when the post mortem of the victim would also be carried out,” he said yesterday, when giving brief details of the incident.
According to him, the two groups of youths had clashed outside the library at Jalan Taipakkung over a “misunderstanding”.
SAC (II) Mortadza said police arrested several people on the spot and others from around Penampang and the city. Police also seized a shotgun, swords, axes and sticks from those arrested.
The shotgun was licensed to one of the arrested men.
“Only a post mortem could indicate whether Anthony died of one or more gunshot wounds. Also, at this moment, we cannot say what led to the misunderstanding,” he said.
A police task force headed by SAC (II) Mortadza has been formed to investigate the murder.
